How the count works

A school day here is any day on your chosen weekdays (Monday to Friday by default) from today to the last day that isn't a holiday or inside a break you listed. The last day always counts. Today counts while "Count today" is ticked, which is right if you still have school today.

Calendar days and school days differ a lot. From Monday, November 2, 2026 to Friday, June 4, 2027 there are 214 calendar days but 135 school days, once weekends, Thanksgiving, a two-week winter break, the January and February Monday holidays, a week of spring break and Memorial Day are taken out.

To count down to winter break or spring break, set the last day to your last school day before the break. Breaks after that date are ignored, so you don't need to edit the days-off box.

Adding your district's breaks

Every district publishes a school calendar, usually as a PDF on its website. Copy the closures into the days-off box, one per line: a single date like 11/11, or a range like 3/22 - 3/26. Text after the dates is ignored, so you can label each line.

Dates without a year are placed inside the school year you are counting, so 12/21 means this December and 1/1 means the following January. You can also write full dates like 2027-03-22.

The holidays option skips Labor Day, Thanksgiving Thursday and Friday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day and Memorial Day. Many districts also close for Veterans Day, Columbus or Indigenous Peoples' Day, Good Friday or teacher workdays. Add those yourself if your calendar lists them.

How long is a school year

Most US states require about 180 instructional days a year. A few set fewer days but a minimum number of hours, and some, like Kansas, require more. At 5 school days a week, 180 days is 36 weeks of classes.

Half days and early-release days still count as school days here. A snow day that is made up later doesn't change the count; one that isn't made up should go in the days-off box.

Questions

How many school days are left in the year?

It depends on your district's last day and breaks. Enter your last day of school and your remaining breaks above and the result updates as you type. Most US school years end between late May and late June.

How many weeks of school are left?

Divide the school days left by the school days in a week. 45 school days left on a Monday-to-Friday schedule is 9 weeks.

How many days are in a school year?

About 180 in most US states. State minimums range from about 160 to 186 days, and some states count hours instead.

Does the count include today and the last day?

The last day is always included. Today is included while "Count today" is ticked; untick it once school is over for the day.

How do I count down to winter break?

Set the last day to your last school day before winter break, usually the Friday before it starts. Breaks after that date are ignored automatically.

School calendars differ by district. Check your district's published calendar for exact dates.
